Last one and then I’ll shut up. Mental illness affects 1 in 4 people – It is the biggest killer of men under 45 and 84 take their lives every week. Every 6 seconds someone contacts Samaritans charity. One in ten mothers experience postnatal depression. In a recent survey of over 1000 illustrators, around 70% reported issues with mental health (This is a big problem in the creative industry). I’ve seen so many people’s lives affected, most of whom you’d never know what they are going through, so I’m cool with talking about this even if some of you feel this is uncomfortable. I think the reason so many people struggle more than they need to is because of society’s attitudes towards mental health – avoiding sadness or grief as though they’re not important or telling people to be ‘brave’ when the only bravery we’ve been taught is to fight stuff alone. Being brave or courageous isn’t battling it out on on your own, it is getting help when you need it and learning tools to manage the mind you were born with. The labels you have been given do not define you.

In light of Mental Health Awareness Week I created medicinal labels to represent the ‘labels’ surrounding some of the stigmas of mental illness, with advice on the back for how to recognise problems (swipe). ‘You’re just a bit of a worrier,’ people said ‘you’re worrying over nothing,’ as though anxiety is on a par with discovering a mouldy yoghurt in your fridge. You’re embarrassed of just how crippling it is, because the world rolls their eyes at ‘worriers’ – they like bold and fearless. So you try to hide it in case anyone calls you soft. Actually, most of my anxiety stemmed from caring strongly for my world and the people in it. Basically, I give a shit about an awful lot of things – that is something I am not ashamed of or prepared to change. What I have changed (with help) is how much weight I let that have on my own shoulders – in being prepared to walk away and let go of things out of my control. But I will always unapologetically give a shit. .

I love quiet. It gives me space to think and do my best work (admittedly that’s probably because I spend most of the time getting shouted at by a three year old tyrant, but still). Being quiet in itself is not a problem, but if you’re quieter than usual and avoiding all human contact for long periods of time then it could be a sign that you need to check in with your mental health.

Another top fact is that emotions are bloody brilliant and it’s important to express them. If they go into overdrive and are resulting in prolonged sadness or anger, that’s when you might need a little help....

In the light of Mental Health Awareness Week, I created this project to break some of the stigma surrounding it. This is the first of a series of medicine bottle labels I created that to reflect the ‘labels’ that were placed on me when I first opened up about mental illness (swipe for pics - You can see the full set in the link in my bio). One of the turning points for me was in seeing my 'weaknesses' as strengths that had simply gone into overdrive. I realised that overcoming mental illness was, in part, about acceptance and having the tools to manage my thoughts better. I felt empowered to get help. For this project I have written instructions on the back of each bottle for how to recognise when ‘strengths’ have gone into overdrive. .

For the rest of the month I am giving 50% of all online sales profit to Samaritans charity and I have set up a just giving page if you’d like to donate off back of this project. (Link in bio!). .
