The In the Gap! music book is an easy and accessible resource for teachers to incorporate improvisation into their music lessons. You can find out more about the book and purchase it from improvinthegap.com.
The brief for this project was initially to develop some characters that could go onto the chapter pages of a music workbook for children but the project evolved to also include the full design of the book, the 'In the Gap' branding and the stationery designs.
The chapter introductions required a character design, each one based on the title of each song. The characters were my starting point for this project this was the main reason Hannah from In the Gap contacted me. We really wanted the characters to bring a fun element to the book as well as give each chapter a clear theme. I drew out the character ideas in rough initially and on approval worked them up into full colour to work into the design, with a view that each one would be placed on a brightly coloured background.
Because the book needed to be clear and easy to follow, I chose a simple layout for the text and music scores but added bold colour to the chapter introductions to contrast, making the book bright and also creating clear colour coding. The colour codes were also used for the dots which added another design element to the book which tied it all together and made it very colourful.
"Lisa's illustrations really brought my project to life! She created a strong identity for my book and business and was a delight to work with - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her."
